In my profession as a social worker, I have faced considerable challenges affecting both the clients and myself. Poor decision-making has been a major problem among many clients resulting in high dependency and improper problem-solving skills. Currently, I have been dealing with a client suffering from similar problems. For a long time, my client has been struggling to impress his parents through decision making. Earlier on, after seeking employment, he requested permission to meet a counselor. The reality of the matter is that he just wanted to go and meet a friend. This information happened to leak to the parents, and since then he has never regained the ‘their trust. His honesty is in doubt despite all the attempts he has been putting through.
Through time, the situation has developed into a psychological problem and thus the need for my intervention. The client has never been trusted by the parents and at the same time treated like a child. My client is tired of being monitored by the parents and to some extent feels that his social life has been cut off. Whenever he happens to go elsewhere despite work and church, a lot of questions do arise. Parents have become more inquisitive of his decisions making as my client lose himself in thought. In such a circumstance, my job as a professional is to help him regain self-control and develop a mind capable of making decisions relevant decisions contrary to the expectations of the many including parents. Furthermore, the parents assert that he should always be attending church services so as to make friends who may direct him to a good path. Despite not refusing to such a proposal, he is not to the idea. All that my client wants is freedom and to regain trust through interaction with people of different character in the society.
My client is in a desperate circumstance; being of age and based on what is happening, his self-esteem is lowered. The influence and impact that he initially had on his friends and those around are affected. He is undergoing a mental torture, thinking of how he is viewed in the workplace and even by the family members. His life has been entirely affected, and feels that he needs to rebuild it. In my recent discussion with the client (which I have attached), he seemed to have improvements based on the words portraying his potential and the fact that he has invested a lot to achieve freedom and mental harmony. About the entire premises, my interest in the piece is to be able to show how poor judgment and decision-making emanates from mental frictions. I have come to realize that not all challenges affecting my clients are medically related.. In fact, most of them are psychological which can be diagnosed and proper intervention strategy put in place.
Clinical Hypothesis
The major influence acting as a drawback to my client is a cultural concern. The disparity in generations is an issue. Some of the cultural ways of life seem to be outdated which to the parents, because of the differences in age. I must recognize the fact that culture is important to each one of us and it determines a lot, especially about our history. Furthermore, there is some minor aspect that we cannot embrace as they fade with time. Additionally, other concern here is the question of church attendance, and it is not right to hold a belief that those in the church are the ones who can provide good directions pertaining life of an individual. The reality is the fact that, a church is another world comprising the good and bad people regardless of the age. It is, therefore, relevant and of immense importance to understand the fact that the right code of behavior depends on an individual and not some divine or supernatural power as others may think.
Conceivably, social justice stands to be an issue. My client seems not to understand the fact that some privileges accrue to him by being of age and as a member of the society and which are not linked to parental control. Freedom is a matter of fundamental concern, and therefore my client is entitled to one. Logically, ethics is another significant issue and a question of integrity, (Carey & Green, 2013). The code of conduct of the customer is in question. In one of the exchanges, the client confesses that he lied seeking a chance to meet a counselor only to see a friend at the movies finally. In this context, the client seems not to respect the job and at the same time not poses the core values required to achieve the objectives of the institution. From a professional viewpoint, despite the fact that he behaved irresponsibly, many reasons can be used to explain the action. Among the many available, psychological factors can be an issue. Based on the works of Jean Piaget, B.F. Skinner, and many other psychologists, one will understand the reason why it is critical not to have psychological friction as they are linked to the operations of the brain. It is a very crucial part, and as for my client, that must be one of the reasons influencing his behavior.
Ecology, which is the entire surrounding, is a factor that has influenced the conduct of my client greatly. The reference point acting as the primary source of a problem is the social environment. The view of the society concerning my client's behavior is the primary source of psychological torment. The fact that friends, parents and other family members are questioning his honesty and ideas affects him greatly. Focusing on self-esteem in particular, it is a dependent behavior. Its potential fully relies on the opinions of others based on views and actions of an individual. It will be perceived as the loss of sense of dignity whenever destroyed.
Intervention Strategies
In reality, my client has an issue that needs to be solved and I have a plan for combating all of the outlined issues. The outstanding challenge is the fact that he is having many psychological problems arising from work, parents and how to make decisions in his life. These challenges solved in numerous ways following an action plan
Being a mental issue, it does not require any medication (Safir, Wallach & Rizzzo, 2015). The most basic strategy to be applied in treatment begins with proper definition and identification of the problem. In this part of the strategic plan, I will work to identify source of the problem on the client’s part. This will involve an attempt to ask questions regarding the challenges and thereby becoming able to come up with some assumptions relevant to it.. I will facilitate such identification in line with the developmental areas, for example, those related to ethics of work, his freedom and many others. He should also be able to think of ecological and cultural impacts towards his condition. The major significance of this is to enable him to understand some of the key areas that he should deal with to ensure success in releasing the problem.
Similarly, it is important to identify the possible causes of the problem. How did it emerge? What was the need? Could it be something that started long ago or just a recent challenge? Understanding the cause of an issue is usually a milestone to solving a problem. Within the strategic plan, the client is to dig deep into his memory and find out if it is the first time the problem is happening or not. Additionally, he is to assess himself and see whether the problem is as a result of the recent encounter or a built up to a situation that existed before. The essence of this is to enable my client to understand the variety of factors and issues influencing his condition; all this were captured during our conversation.
Additionally, coming up with possible solutions based on the highlighted problems is crucial. The initial planning strategies are essential for the implementation of this policy. The idea given must be built on the sources and urges that led my client to engage in a problem. Solutions provided are not to be implemented immediately, but the best of all is to be considered. It is to be done after a thorough assessment of the procedures to ascertain quality and degree of achieving the necessary condition. The solutions given must be those addressing the sources (Brandell, 2011). For example, as a professional, it is my duty to ensure that the parents are talked to. The idea here is to ensure that the client's social environment is conducive for his mental development. Restrictions from the side of the parents should be reduced to allow him to earn trust from different areas not strictly through the church. Also, from the side of the job, it is the parent's duty to address the bosses on his current situation so that they can know how to handle him without continuous mental breakdown.
Assessment of the Response and Reaction
I must confess that the advice I accorded the client was sufficient and to the point in most of the aspects that needed my attention. As a specialist, from the beginning, I understood the challenges the client was going through, and I must confess that none of them was a medical issue and thus my diagnosis was very relevant. At the point when I was talking to the client that is when I realized that indeed I had achieved much since he was able to reveal much information about his challenges that he could not explain earlier on. It is a good sign of professionalism thus the reason why I'm very pleased with myself. Of all the issues that I attempted to solve, the best one concerned ability to make the informed decision. It is because I gave a series of procedures and an explanation of the action plan under each. If well followed I expect the best outcome. Based on the interest my client has in achieving the best and be free from the chains he wasn't born with, I'm optimistic, and in a couple of days, good news will follow.
In the perspective of ethics, I have concluded that despite my attempts to help the client fully, much has not been done to satisfaction. The reason is rooted in the fact that most of my solutions stem from decision-making strategies linked to psychology. If good decisions are made concerning issues, right code of conduct is likely to be instilled in the individuals who are not always the case. Additionally, I affirm that the wrong and good that emanates from people's action are subject to decisions made. Good choices make straight individuals who are capable of impacting and influencing other people in the place of work. This has always been the need of my client despite the hindrance.
Objectively, the fundamental principles of this research lie in the field of psychology focused on the behavior changes and the decision making strategies of an individual. In supplementing the concepts, the paper also makes use of some applications of social work in a broader picture and its influence on humanity. Focusing on the fundamental need for diagnosing, the client responded well. Being in the right condition, he managed to air out his problems, stated clearly the sources and drives that motivated his actions. The solutions outlined directly addressed the problems and thus met with a lot of ease. Also, parents and workmates played a bigger role in offering a fascinating social environment. Because esteem is psychological, he managed to gain it faster acting as a driving force towards achieving the rest. His reaction to the plan was better than expected because of the inner drive that he had from the beginning. The strategy was therefore well established and can be applied in solving a psychological problem as long as the client is willing to participate in the process.
Appendix A
Interview
Client A: I went to Church on Christmas. I would have like to have gone on New Year's as well, but was unable to get a ride.
Me: Sounds like you enjoy your time at church?
Client A: It's a blessing to be there. I like going whenever I can get there. I enjoy going the most on Monday and Thursday nights when they have a night where mostly younger adults come for group activities with people closer to my age.
Me: I am glad you have found a place you enjoy to go and people you have found you have common interests with.
Client A: Yeah, It has been a long time since I have been able to associate with people of like mind and age. It's nice to be away from the house and enjoying myself, for sure.
Me: It's so good to hear your getting some time away from the house. Showing others, you have the ability to get out in the community by yourself, Is a major step toward showing your making reasonable and good decisions.
Client A: Thanks, I have been trying to be more responsible and show my parents I can make the right decisions given a chance. You and I know I have not been the best decision maker.
Me: Can you elaborate on what you mean?
Client A: Um, you know like telling FLC staff I have an appointment with my counselor. When I don't and just went to meet some dude I met at the movies the night before.
Me: I did hear about that.
Client A: That was not smart was It?
Me: I might say it was not a good decision. But that is not a measurement of your smarts.
Client A: My dad was pissed off about that one. Now I have to work at earning back his trust.
Me: Yeah, I can understand why he would be upset.
